The Algarve region of Portugal is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe, and indeed the world. 1.Crowne Plaza, Vilamoura

Less than half an hour from Faro Airport and set in beautiful surroundings, the Crowne Plaza in Vilamoura has with extensive gardens that lead right down to a beautiful sandy beach. This resort hotel is beautifully appointed and well-equipped, with exceptional outside pools, great kids’ play area as well as a relaxing indoor pool and spa.

Rooms are in keeping with the rest of the hotel – modern and spacious. Meals here are outstandingly delicious as are the wonderful cocktails, and live music is offered on a regular basis.

The beautiful Vilamoura Marina with its wide selection of bars and quality restaurants is just five minutes’ walk away and the hotel is only 100 meters from the town’s Casino. This is a great base for visiting the Algarve and a great resort to just kick back and relax.

2. Yellow Lagos Meia Praia, Lagos

This hotel is situated less than an hour to the west of Faro Airport, near to the tip of the Algarve. It has a beautiful, modern design offering top class accommodation. Many rooms have extensive sea views, some offer views across to the nearby town of Lagos. The hotel grounds lead down to a wonderful, long and wide stretch of beach with several smaller rocky coves within walking distance. 

Amenities include a fantastic glass-paneled pool surrounded by cushioned sunbeds and quality furniture, an indoor pool and a spa. The rooms are beautifully appointed and have luxury bathrooms with freestanding baths. The restaurant offers fine dining and the bars feature an extensive cocktail list. Lagos, with its range of fine restaurants and bars is just a short taxi trip away. 

3. Pestana Alvor Praia, Portimao

The Pestana Alvor Praia is located about 50 minutes to the west of Faro Airport in a slightly elevated position right on Alvor Beach. The beach is wide and sandy but also features some very interesting, typically Portuguese rock
formations. 

The hotel offers a selection of large rooms, including garden rooms from which you can walk right outside into the beautiful lush grounds. Many rooms offer spectacular sea views. The pool area is well equipped with sunbeds and the pool uses seawater. There is also a beautiful indoor pool and spa. Access to the beach is via steps and also a lift and there are two bar/restaurants on the beach which specialize in fresh seafood and have a great atmosphere.

The center of Alvor is just 30 minutes’ walk. Essentially a small fishing village, Alvor has a great choice of fine restaurants and bars and a busy nightlife. 

4. Real Bellavista Hotel & Spa, Albufeira

The Real Bellavista is situated in the center of Albufeira, nearer to the old town area but also with easy access to the new town and beach. Amenities include indoor and outdoor pools, jacuzzi and a fitness center with a gym and workout room. The hotel rooms are very large and well equipped, with large screen TVs and DVD players and spacious bathrooms. Meals are buffet style, with lots of choice of hot meals and fresh fruits and salads. 

Getting around the town is not a problem as the hotel offers a free shuttle service for guests. Taxis are cheap and plentiful, and there is also a little tourist train that takes a route around the new town, the beach and the old town. 

Albufeira nightlife is some of the best in the Algarve with something to suit everyone. The beach is also beautiful, wide and long and with soft white sand as well as lots of rocks and cliffs.

5. Vale da Lapa Resort and Spa     

Vale da Lapa is about an hour to the west of Faro Airport, in the town of Carvoeiro. The accommodation at the resort is far more than what is available at most other hotels – two bedroom townhouses are available including full
kitchens with full cooking facilities and truly offering a home from home. The grounds are beautifully green and lush with plants, trees and flowers and there is a fabulous pool area. Some rooms offer distant sea views.

The town of Carvoeiro is a few kilometers away (15 minutes by taxi) but there are some local bars and a fantastic Michelin Star restaurant, Bon Bon, within five minutes’ walk!
