Guidester’s Best of Ireland Tour kicks off with the historic heart of Dublin, heads down through charming Kilkenny to Cork City and the gorgeous south country, over to Killarney and the stunning Ring of Kerry, then up north through County Clare stopping through the majestic Cliffs of Moher, hiking the hills of Connemara and ending in medieval Galway City. You will be experiencing must see historical sights, charming villages, untold natural beauty, music filed pubs, and plenty of local culture!

Tour will run September 22nd-October 1st, 2018. You will be flying out on the 21st to arrive in Dublin on the 22nd. You may arrive early if you want a couple extra days in Dublin.

Day 1: Welcome to Ireland

You will arrive in Dublin on the 22nd and get settled into your hotel. Meet your guide and fellow tour members at our hotel at 4 p.m. After a group meeting, we’ll enjoy a “Welcome to Ireland” dinner all together, followed by an orientation walk through the heart of downtown Dublin.

Day 2: The Historic Heart of Dublin

This morning we’ll take a walking tour through Dublin, learning about its rich history from the days of Viking raids to the hard centuries of British occupation to the proud and progressive city of today. We’ll end our tour at Trinity College for an illuminating look at the remarkable Book of Kells, a creative jolt that helped pull Europe out of the Dark Ages. You’ll have the rest of the day free to feel the pulse of a city thriving with street poets and musicians.

Day 3: Kilkenny and Rock of Cashel

On our way to Kilkenny we will stop at Rock of Cashel, one of the most important medieval structures in all of Ireland. After a tour of Cashel, we will get settled in Kilkenny before a walking tour of the charming town. Kilkenny is famed for its charming atmosphere played out in its maze of narrow Norman alleyways, twisting and turning around abbeys, cathedrals, and crumbling city walls. We will have a private tour of the Abbey and nearby Kilkenny castle.

Day 4: Cork and Blarney Castle

This morning we will be treated to a walking tour of Cork which will include the city’s main historic center and gorgeous Saint Fin Barre’s Cathedral. After our walking tour of Cork we will head 5 miles north to the famed Blarney Castle. Climb the castle steps and kiss the world-famous Blarney Stone to gain the gift of eloquence.  We will a lot some time so you can stroll the expansive castle gardens displaying all type of magical flora and fauna. This evening we will be treated to some world class traditional Irish folk music, known as ‘Trad’, at a local pub. Cork is known for its live traditional music and you won’t miss out!

Day 5: Kinsale and Jameson Distillery

We will get outside Cork and head to the coastal village of Kinsale. After a beautiful walk around the village and coastline we will take a trip to nearby Jameson Distillery. Expert guides will lead us through the old distillery and share the fascinating history of Jameson Irish Whiskey. Guided tours come with a complimentary glass of Jameson and we will even be able to take part in a private tasting to become a ‘certified whiskey taster.’ This evening in Cork will be open and for those that are up for it we can get in another round of live Irish music.

Day 6: Killarney and Dingle Peninsula

We head west from Cork to the gorgeous Killarney and Dingle Peninsula. Situated at the north end of the Ring of Kerry, Killarney is one of Ireland’s leading tourist destinations due to the abundant lake and mountain scenery. Today you will have a choice – tour the historic town of Killarney and hang out at the local pubs or spend a free day at Dingle Peninsula. Around Dingle you can take a long walk along the local paths and lanes, hire a bicycle and pedal the scenic 30-mile Dingle Loop, or sail for the day to the rugged Blasket Islands. For those that chose the peninsula you will be picked up in Dingle in the early evening for a ride back to the hotel in Killarney.

Day 7: Ring of Kerry

Most of this day will be spent in the unspoiled Ring of Kerry. Known locally as ‘The Kingdom’, Kerry is the crown jewel of Ireland’s scenic locations. In this 111-mile-long mile circular route there are endless panoramic landscapes and picturesque villages to experience. We will be stopping frequently to walk, take photos, visit the villages, and experience the natural beauty of Kerry.

Day 8: Cliffs of Moher and Galway City

Today we head up north through County Clare to the dramatic Cliffs of Moher, Ireland’s most visited natural attraction. Standing over 700 ft at their highest point, Moher stretches for 5 miles along the Atlantic coast where you’ll find yourself leaning into the wind on the edge of Europe. After the cliffs we drive to Galway City for a private walking tour of the historic city. Wander Galway City’s cobble-stoned streets and feel yourself stepping back in time to Medieval Ireland.

GALWAY:  Glenlo Abbey

Day 9: Hills of Connemara

After a good night’s rest at Glenlo Abbey we’ll drive through the region of Connemara, enjoying the gorgeous Irish countryside. We will get out for a couple hours and experience the scenery firsthand on one of the area’s best hikes. The Diamond Hill Walk will take us up the main mountain of Connemara offering breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. Don’t worry it’s a moderate walk and no rock climbing experience is necessary! After a long day in the countryside we will unwind at the local Crane Bar where we will jam to some local Irish trad.

GALWAY:  Glenlo Abbey

Day 10: Galway and Depart for Home:

Breakfast and tour debrief. Planned activities in Galway for those that don’t fly out early. Tour scheduled to end by 1pm. You will fly out of nearby Shannon airport. Since you are gaining 6 hours going back you will arrive home the same day.

Passport Information

You will need a valid passport. We recommend renewing or applying for your passport well in advance of travel due to higher wait times for passports in 2019. Passport MUST be valid six months after your final return date. You can find detailed instructions on how to renew or apply for your passport online here through the State Department.


You will want to pack for cooler weather, but be ready for sunny days as well. A thick wind coat is advised. Ireland does sees its share of rain so rain gear is highly recommended. Comfortable walking shoes is a must as there will be a lot of walking. Hiking boots recommended. 

Ireland in the fall begins to cool down with average temperatures ranging from 61 as a high during the day, and a low of 50 in the evenings. 

This tour includes airfare and we will fly out at as a group.

Some members may elect to add a pre or post stay to the tour. We are happy to work with you to accommodate an additional stay in Ireland or wider Europe.

You are welcome to come a day or two early before the tour start date. This will allow you to recover from jet lag as well as spend more time exploring Dublin.
