Overview & Brief History

A captivating Greek island in the southern Aegean Sea, Santorini is renowned for its stunning landscapes, white-washed buildings perched on cliffs, and vibrant blue-domed churches. This crescent-shaped paradise is not only a visual spectacle but also steeped in history and mythology. Santorini is formed from the remnants of a volcanic caldera, giving it a unique topography that contributes to its allure as a world-class travel destination.

A Brief History

Nestled within the Cyclades archipelago, Santorini has a rich and complex history. The island’s origins are linked to the Minoan civilization, with evidence of human habitation dating back to the Bronze Age. In ancient times, Santorini was known as Thera, and it played a significant role in the Minoan trade network. The catastrophic eruption around 1600 BCE, one of the most powerful in recorded history, drastically altered the island’s landscape, shaping the caldera and potentially influencing the decline of the Minoan civilization.

Over the centuries, Santorini experienced a series of changing rulers, including the Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans. Each era left its mark on the island’s architecture and culture. The name “Santorini” itself is derived from the island’s patron saint, St. Irene, who is celebrated annually.

In the early 20th century, Santorini went through a period of economic decline and emigration, particularly following the devastating earthquake of 1956. However, the island underwent a remarkable revival in the latter half of the century, fueled by its burgeoning tourism industry. Today, Santorini stands as a symbol of both ancient history and modern allure, attracting visitors with its breathtaking vistas, archaeological sites, and vibrant communities that have risen from the ashes of its volcanic past.

Things to See & Do
