Real ID requirements have been a long time coming—but the deadline is finally here. On May 7, 2025, U.S. travelers must present a REAL ID or other approved ID for domestic flights and access to secure federal sites. The good news? Getting ready is easier than you might think.

What Is a REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a federally compliant form of identification issued by your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Beginning May 7, 2025, travelers age 18 and older will need one to:
- Board domestic flights within the United States
- Enter secure federal buildings, including courthouses and military bases
If you don’t have a REAL ID by then, you must present another approved form of ID—such as a valid U.S. passport, passport card, Global Entry card, or military ID—to travel or gain access.
How to Know if Your License is REAL ID Compliant
Look at the top right corner of your driver’s license or state ID. REAL ID-compliant cards will display a gold or black star. Cards that say “NOT FOR FEDERAL IDENTIFICATION” are not compliant.

How to Get a REAL ID
REAL IDs must be obtained in person at a DMV or licensing office. You’ll need to bring original or certified copies of documents that verify:
- Your identity and legal presence
(e.g., U.S. passport, certified birth certificate, permanent resident card) - Your Social Security number
(e.g., signed Social Security card, W-2, or pay stub with SSN) - Two separate proofs of residency
(e.g., utility bills, bank statements, lease or mortgage documents, insurance policies)
If your legal name has changed, you’ll also need to bring documentation such as a marriage certificate or court order.
Pro Tip: As the May 7, 2025 deadline approaches, DMV offices are likely to see increased volume. Not all locations offer appointments, so plan accordingly—arrive early, bring the right documents, and allow extra time.

What happens if I don’t have a REAL ID by May 7, 2025?
You’ll need another approved form of ID, like a U.S. passport, to board domestic flights or access federal buildings.
Is there an additional cost?
In most states, there’s no additional charge for a REAL ID beyond your standard license renewal or replacement fee—but check your local DMV for exact pricing and details.
