Europe’s NEW Entry Requirement: Everything Travelers Need To Know!

Are there travel restrictions in Europe in 2025? It’s a question many Americans are asking as they prepare for international adventures. With global travel rebounding, understanding entry requirements has become more important than ever. From COVID-era policies that have largely expired to the upcoming implementation of the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), navigating European travel can feel like hitting a moving target.

The good news is that Europe remains open to travelers—but upcoming changes could impact how you enter. Most notably, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), a new entry requirement for visa-exempt travelers, was expected to launch sometime in 2025, but its exact start date has now been delayed.

Here’s what travelers need to know now—and how to prepare for these changes ahead of time.

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS, or the European Travel Information and Authorization System, is a new electronic travel authorization for short-term visits. Think of it as Europe’s version of the U.S. ESTA system—a quick and simple pre-screening measure for travelers from visa-exempt countries.

While it’s not a visa, ETIAS ensures enhanced security by pre-approving travelers before they arrive. Once approved, ETIAS allows stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period, covering tourism, business, transit, or medical purposes. For Americans, it’s a straightforward process with minimal costs, ensuring that your focus remains on exploring Europe’s treasures.

Why Was ETIAS Created?

ETIAS was introduced to address modern security challenges while managing high volumes of international travel. The goal is to identify potential threats before they arrive at the border and to enhance the safety of European residents and travelers alike.

Much like the U.S. ESTA system, ETIAS aims to:

  • Enhance Security: By pre-screening travelers, European authorities can identify potential risks before they reach the continent.
  • Streamline Entry: With travelers pre-approved, border checks will become faster and more efficient.
  • Modernize Border Management: ETIAS is part of a broader effort to improve coordination and safety across European Union member states.

Who Needs ETIAS?

If you’re a citizen of a visa-exempt country, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, you’ll need ETIAS to enter participating European countries. The requirement applies to all travelers regardless of age, so families traveling with children must obtain individual authorizations for every member—even infants.

Countries requiring ETIAS include popular destinations such as France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, along with non-Schengen countries like Croatia and Bulgaria. EU citizens and those requiring traditional visas are exempt from this new system.

ETIAS will apply to short-term stays for tourism, business, transit, or medical reasons.

How to Apply for ETIAS?

Applying for ETIAS is simple, fast, and affordable. Here’s what you’ll need to do:

  1. Provide Personal Information: Enter your name, date of birth, and passport details. Note that ETIAS will be linked to your passport and will remain valid for up to three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you’ll need to apply for a new ETIAS authorization.
  2. Answer Travel and Security Questions: Share your travel history and answer basic security-related questions.
  3. Pay the Application Fee: At approximately $7.50 USD, it’s a budget-friendly step in your travel planning.

Most applications are approved within minutes, but it’s wise to apply early in case additional processing is required. Make sure your passport is valid for the duration of your trip, and stay updated on ETIAS requirements by visiting the official website.

When Do You Need to Have ETIAS?

On 5 March 2024, EU Home Affairs Ministers endorsed a revised timeline for the launch of the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). The system is now expected to go into effect in the last quarter of 2026.

Once launched, there will be a 180-day grace period during which travelers can familiarize themselves with the system and apply without penalty. During this time, European authorities will also continue testing and fine-tuning the technical infrastructure.

After the grace period ends, all visa-exempt third-country nationals—including U.S. citizens—will be required to hold an approved ETIAS before entering participating countries.

Key Destinations Requiring ETIAS

ETIAS will be required for entry into 30 European countries, including:

  • Schengen Countries: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Norway, and more.
  • Non-Schengen Nations: Croatia, Bulgaria, and Romania, among others.

This wide coverage ensures consistent security measures across most of the continent, making travel more secure and seamless for everyone.

Official ETIAS Website and Data Protection

This is the only official website of the European Union that allows you to submit applications for ETIAS travel authorizations directly, in accordance with the strictest data protection standards.

Any other website that provides intermediary services will collect your data and use the official ETIAS website to file the application on your behalf. These websites may also require you to pay additional fees.

Before you decide to use the services of intermediary websites, make sure you verify the quality of their services, additional charges, and how they protect your data.

Applying for ETIAS on Behalf of Others

It is possible to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization on behalf of someone else. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or a commercial intermediary like a travel agency, you can submit an application if you have their authorization.

Both the applicant and the representative will need to sign a declaration of representation, ensuring all permissions are documented.

This is where our services shine. By handling the application process on your behalf, we ensure every step is completed accurately and efficiently. With our expertise, you can enjoy peace of mind knowing your travel plans are in capable hands, allowing you to focus on the excitement of your upcoming journey.
