Exploring the Fairytale Beauty of Neuschwanstein Castle

Nestled amidst the Bavarian Alps, Neuschwanstein Castle stands as a testament to timeless beauty and Bavaria’s rich history. This iconic castle, immortalized by its resemblance to a fairytale dream, offers visitors a glimpse into the romanticized era of 19th-century architecture and the intriguing legacy of Ludwig II, King of Bavaria.

With its stunning towers, picturesque setting, and enchanting interior, Neuschwanstein promises an awe-inspiring journey through history and imagination. This is also the castle that actually inspired Walt Disney’s famous castle!

As you approach Neuschwanstein Castle, its soaring turrets and dreamlike silhouette against the backdrop of the Alpine landscape immediately transport you into a storybook setting.

The castle is located in the tiny village of Hohenschwangau, but people often use nearby Füssen as a base to visit the area. If you want a unique place to stay look into Oberammergau just 45 minutes away and teeming with Bavarian charm.

Before setting off to the castle I would recommend first going up to Mary’s Bridge for the best views of the castle and surrounding landscape.

Admiring the Surroundings:

Beyond the castle walls, immerse yourself in breathtaking vistas. Wander along Marienbrücke (Mary’s Bridge) for a panoramic view of Neuschwanstein Castle amidst lush greenery and the serene Alpsee Lake below. This is THE spot for photos of the castle’s exterior. You will want to make sure you allot 15-20 minutes to walk up to the bridge before your tour begins.

If you have more time you can hike the nearby trails during warmer seasons to fully appreciate the natural beauty enveloping this architectural marvel.

Exploring the Castle

Embark on a guided tour through the castle’s interior to unravel the stories behind its opulent rooms. Marvel at the intricate designs of the Throne Room, the lavish King’s Bedrooms, and the awe-inspiring Singers’ Hall. Each chamber holds a piece of history and artistry that showcases the opulence of the 19th century.

TIP: Photos are not allowed inside the castle rooms, but there is a small outdoor balcony with incredible views of the mountainous landscape (pictured above) Don’t miss it!

A visit to the inside of Neuschwanstein Castle is only possible as part of a guided tour. Tickets are available online at www.hohenschwangau.de. Same day tickets are available on site at the Ticket Center Hohenschwangau, subject to availability.

As part of purchasing your guided tour you will need to also choose your time slot. Make sure to pay attention to the language of the tour given for the time as they have more than just English tours throughout the day. Tickets are currently running about EUR 20.50 per adult.

Tips for Your Visit:

✅ Planning Ahead: Due to its popularity, plan your visit in advance. Purchase tickets online if your visiting in the popular months June-October, or at the ticket center in Hohenschwangau village, a short distance from the castle.

✅ Carriage Ride: Take the horse drawn carriage up and/or down the hill for a small fee, 4 euro, for a unique and easy way to get up the incline.

✅ Comfortable Attire: Wear comfortable shoes for exploring the castle’s interior and the surrounding trails. Mary’s bridge is narrow and the trails can become muddy and water logged after a good rain.

✅ Timing: Allocate sufficient time for your visit; exploring the castle and its surroundings may take several hours. It takes time to get up and down the hill and time should be given to walk the bridge and some surrounding trails, weather permitting.

✅ Photography: Make sure to get the photo from Mary’s Bridge, and note that photography is restricted within the castle’s interior.
