Total trip time: Although Sicily looks quite small, there is a ton to see often with unexpected traffic and roadworks, always adding to your travel time. A good visit would range from 8-10 days. I highly recommend at least 7 days if you want to get a good overview of both sides of the island, but more would be better!
I would also recommend hiring a car. This is the best way to get around, allowing you convenience and access to many lesser traveled sites. Public transit on Sicily isn’t the greatest so car really is the best mode of transportation.
How to See Sicily If You Have Less Time:
- Choose either the west or east coast and focus there. Both sides are quite different so if you’re limited on time choose one area to explore.
- Decide what kind of experience you want to have – beach, history/architecture, food.
- If you have to choose between Palermo and Syracuse I would pick Syracuse, it’s cleaner, prettier, and the food is outstanding.
Tip: If you only have 3-4 days in Sicily pick between Syracuse, Palermo, or Taormina. These are all good bases to visit and explore things in the area. It doesn’t make sense to try and bounce around for just a few days.
Palermo
